Update (9/25): Cue the 100 percent on-brand sounds of a classic James Bond theme song, amateur secret agents. Sam Smith's big, bold, beautiful tune for Spectre, the 24th Bond movie and the fourth starring Daniel Craig, has reported for duty. "Writing's on the Wall" is a tender, explosion-free track that slides through the Bond scales with a smoothness reflective of 007 himself. After spinning it, you won't be able to help but get pumped for the November 6 release of Spectre, one of the 14 films we're crazy-excited about for this fall.
Original story (9/21): Can't wait any longer for Sam Smith's crack at the James Bond theme? Maybe this will help matters a bit: On Monday the English GRAMMY winner posted on Twitter a 15-second clip of "Writing's on the Wall," Smith's foray into the Bond theme lore via the upcoming film Spectre. Listen below:
What does the teaser tell us? Only what we already figured: It's going to be grandiose and strings will be involved. Lots and lots of strings. In fact, Smith's vocal is not heard at all in the clip, replaced by the sweeping orchestra in what sounds like something that could have easily been lifted from the early days of the James Bond character.
Unfortunately, that's all you'll get until Friday, when the full "Writing's on the Wall" is released. When it is, it'll be the first new tune from Smith as the main artist since the material from his 2014 debut In the Lonely Hour.
Spectre, the 24th film in the Bond franchise, is out Oct. 26 in England, followed by a worldwide Nov. 6 release.
