Ellie Goulding is an interesting pop star. She's wickedly famous in her native U.K. and is a household name stateside…although she still feels slightly mysterious. We know her songs often deal with internal reflections and external relationships. We know she's been tied to One Direction's Niall Horan and Ed Sheeran...but we don't really pry too much into her personal life. It's kind of brilliant: She can be whoever she wants to, and we'll continue to love it.
"Army" is the latest track from her forthcoming On My Mind album, and it sort of mirrors that mentality. The song starts slowly and asymmetrically, before growing into a massive love song, with Goulding singing a repetitive chorus of "When I'm with you, I'm standing with an army."
The song differs from her last single, "On My Mind," but both share an important theme: Ellie Goulding is unafraid to sing songs about her own vulnerability. That's really cool!
On My Mind is due out Nov. 6. Listen to "Army" above, then click through our list of breakout artists to keep an eye on this year.
