The No. 1 album in the country this week was released in May, had previously missed the Top 10 and was off the Billboard 200 albums chart completely as of last week. That’s what happens when you enjoy a huge night on one of the biggest music awards shows of the year!
Singer-songwriter Chris Stapleton’s debut LP, Traveller, shoots to No. 1 on this week’s chart, with 177,000 equivalent album units (153,000 in pure sales), per Nielsen Music. That’s all thanks to the Country Music Association Awards (CMAs) last Wednesday night (Nov. 4); during the show, Stapleton won male vocalist of the year and new artist of the year, while Traveller was named album of the year. Oh, and Stapleton performed alongside Justin Timberlake!
Amazingly, Traveller’s sales over the past few days were greater than its total sales before last week. From its May 5 release through last week, the album had sold 96,000 copies according to Nielsen Music, and had previously peaked at No. 14 on the albums chart upon its release.
Speaking of the CMAs, co-host Carrie Underwood’s new album Storyteller holds at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, while Eric Church debuts at No. 3 with his surprise album Mr. Misunderstood. The latter only had two days of availability during last week’s chart week, and should perform well on next week’s chart.
