One Direction's 'Made In The A.M.': 5 Key Takeaways

From Louis Tomlinson's continued greatness to a new, mature, Fleetwood Mac-influenced style makeover, here are five key takeaways from 1D's latest effort

Louis Tomlinson's Continued Rise

Hey guys! Do you know our pal Louis Tomlinson? Once considered the foil to Harry Styles' greatness, now the standout of One Direction? Even after the success of "No Control," Louis' newfound confidence continues on Made in the A.M. Not only does the guy have writing credits on half of the LP, he also just effin' shreds with his voice (like, guitar-solo voice). His verse in the fun.-channeling "End of the Day" is especially remarkable.

The Influences Are Worn Proudly

One Direction love old rock and pop tunes, and they definitely don't hide that love. Who doesn't wear their influences on their sleeves every now and again? Made in the A.M. has the guys doing it in a big way on most tunes. The album begins with "Hey Angel," which completely recalls Oasis and The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony."

...And There's a Perfect Fleetwood Mac Tune!

One Direction's love and appreciation for Fleetwood Mac is well-documented. "Girl Almighty" and "Fireproof" from the band's last album, Four, felt Mick Fleetwood-ian, but they were ultimately holding back a bit. That's no longer the case. "What A Feeling" is arguably one of the best songs on the release, and it absolutely sounds like FM. This is like "Dreams" channeled through a boy band. What's not to love?

There's Much More Adult Content

One Direction are in the early twenties now, so they're preoccupied with the things young adults are preoccupied with. You know, like gettin' down and dirty, trashing hotel rooms with the one you love (for a night)... that sort of thing.

Take "Love You Goodbye." There is literally no way it's about anything other than breakup sex. The chorus goes, "Oh, why you're wearing that to walk out of my life? / Hey, hey, hey / Oh, even though it's over you should stay tonight / Hey, hey, hey/If tomorrow you won't be mine / Won't you give it to me one last time?"

Niall's Incredible Solo on "Olivia"

Okay, this is less of a takeaway than a "Holy shit, listen to those pipes! Who knew Niall Horan had it in him?" realization. His verse on "Olivia" sounds like Willy Wonka's "Pure Imagination," and drips with the same kind of magic. Don't believe us? You gotta press play above!

Jan 16: Action!

Comic book fans rejoice, we’re one step closer to watching ‘The Umbrella Academy.’ As we reported last year, the series, created by former My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and artist Gabriel Bá, was picked up by Netflix for 10 episodes. In a behind-the-scenes photo shared by Bá we see that they already started filming the much anticipated show. Ellen Page is the first actor confirmed for the cast.
