Passion Pit leader Michael Angelakos came out as gay on author Bret Easton Ellis' B.E.E. podcast on Monday (Nov. 9). The 28-year-old had never publicly addressed his sexuality prior to the podcast appearance.
"I'm gay," says Angelakos (via Pitchfork). "And that's it. It just has to happen. This was exactly the type of situation where I don't feel like I'm being threatened."
Angelakos married stylist Kristy Mucci in 2013, and the couple divorced last August. Passion Pit's most recent album, Kindred, is dedicated to her.
"I just wanted so badly to be straight, because I love her so much," Angelakos said on the podcast. "I think that was one of the most painful things when we decided to separate.”
Prior to Passion Pit's 2012 sophomore album Gossamer, Angelakos opened up about his battle with bipolar disorder after canceling a tour to seek treatment. He has since become an avid spokesman for mental health awareness.
Angelakos received an outpouring of support on social media on Monday night, and posted this to Twitter:
