When the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond was released on Monday (Dec. 14), Trekkies were up in arms over the generic feel of the clip, with its wacky one-liners and Beastie Boys soundtrack. Simon Pegg, who returns as Scotty for the third installment of the franchise reboot, hears those fans… and agrees with them.
"I find it to be the marketing people sort of saying, 'Everybody come and see this film. It's full of action and fun,' when there's a lot more to it than that," says Pegg in a new interview. "I didn't love it because I know that there's a lot more to the film."
The 45-year-old actor says that he understands what the studio's marketing department is trying to do, but urged the diehards to see beyond it. "To the Star Trek fans, I'd say: Hang in there, be patient… stick with it."
Star Trek Beyond is due out July 22, 2016. Justin Lin of Fast & Furious fame is taking over the directing reins from J.J. Abrams this time around.
