Colton Haynes Might (Or Might Not) Have Come Out in the Coolest Way Possible

Actor Colton Haynes, of Teen Wolf and Arrow fame, may have publicly come out this weekend on his personal Tumblr. On January 2, a user wrote, "When I found out Colton Haynes had a secret gay past, I got so excited even though I know it makes absolutely no difference in my life." The 27-year-old swiftly responded by quoting the statement, saying: "Was it a secret? Let's all just enjoy life and have no regrets."

While some publications are taking this simply that Haynes "outted himself," his reply represents a firm unwillingness to make being gay, and coming out as such, a controversial event.

While fans are more or less taking the mention as a confirmation, Haynes didn't need a magazine cover, a TV special, or an intense YouTube video to tell everyone he's a dude who digs dudes. Instead, he did so on his personal Tumblr page—the same place he posts his Instagram selfiesshows love to his BFF Serena Williams, and pokes fun at himself with brilliant Britney GIFs.

Haynes is actively counteracting an assumption that being gay is controversial or something that needs to be dramatically or aggressively revealed. Instead, this type of action normalizes something that is very normal; confirming your sexuality on Tumblr is just as significant as doing so on the cover of People

Some may say that the 27-year-old could have more impact with a more public coming-out, as someone who is undeniably attractive and a heteronormative-looking dude (I mean, have you seen those selfies I was talking about earlier?). But Colton is making a larger statement here by refusing to put a label on himself and making coming out (whether or not this is that) pointedly relaxed.

And if this isn't a coming out (maybe a "secret gay past" means he experimented a bit) the actor's message remains the same: Your sexuality isn't a big deal and something that one should address on one's own terms. That's pretty badass, too.
