A Tupac biopic, you may have heard, is on the way. All Eyez on Me—also the name of 'Pac's final album, released seven months before his death in September 1996—has been in development for five years and just notched a big win by casting actress Danai Gurira. Vaulting off her role as Michonne on The Walking Dead, Gurira will play Afeni Shakur, Tupac's mother.
"A political activist and member of the Black Panthers," Deadline writes in its report, "Afeni raised her son to be a voracious reader with a political awareness that informed his development as a street poet." The film will come from Benny Boom, who directed Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), Donald Faison and Mike Epps in Next Day Air and has done non-feature work with Nas, Mobb Deep, Ciara and 50 Cent. Newcomer Demetrius Shipp Jr. will play Tupac.
Gurira has also appeared in The Visitor and Treme. "She’s also an award-winning playwright: her play Eclipsed, which opened off-Broadway with Lupita Nyong'o starring, moves to Broadway in March, and her play Familiar opens off-Broadway in March," Deadline adds.
