Gwen Stefani brought 2015 to a dynamic close by performing "Used to Love You" on New Year's Eve With Carson Daly. The singer performed the synth-pop ballad – a single from her upcoming third solo LP – backed by dramatic lights and a crew of shadowy dancers, emoting lyrics inspired by her break-up with longtime husband Gavin Rossdale.
Stefani debuted the track onstage in October and revealed its emotional music video days later. "Used to Love You" is the first sample of the singer's third album, which will follow 2006's The Sweet Escape. Stefani released two tracks, "Baby Don't Lie" and "Spark the Fire," last year but scrapped an initial project for an entirely new set of material.
The singer told Entertainment Weekly that the new songs are "really natural – they’re from not worrying about what happened or what’s going to happen but about living in the moment, from trying to be present and trying to feel."
