This time last year, on the knife edge between 2014 and 2015, Kanye West dropped a song with Paul McCartney called "Only One." The long-rumored collaboration between Yeezus and a Beatle went down without Sir Paul making a peep, only noodling on the keys the ballad was built over. What made it a keeper was how openly and warmly 'Ye remembered his mother—and spoke to his daughter, as well as himself, from Donda's perspective.
So it's perfect that we're getting another new song for another new year. Thanks for the heads up, Kim:
Virgil Abloh, Kanye's creative director, also posted about the new song, Instagramming a photo of a file being downloaded with the caption, "when kanye calls saying he's dropping a new song and your djing at midnight in Toronto..."
Yeezy is still more or less completely missing in action when it comes to Swish, his seventh solo album, the follow-up to 2013's pointedly brief Yeezus. Rumors and reports fly every so often, but 2015 brought five new 'Ye songs—two of them only played at his fashion shows—and no even-close-to-concrete word on Swish. He recently tweeted that no one should bother him until he finishes the album.
