8 Things You Didn't Know About Panic! at the Disco

Think you know Brendon Urie and his band? Put your knowledge to the test with these little-known facts

They started as a Blink-182 cover band

For bands of a certain time period (the early '00s), beginning as a Blink-182 cover band seemed to be a normal course of action. We know All Time Low began with the songs of Mark, Tom and Travis, and Panic! at the Disco did as well. Ahhh, high school.

Ryan Ross was originally supposed to be the band's lead singer

We know and love Panic! with Brendon Urie at the forefront of band (he's kind of an incredible frontman), but it turns out Ryan Ross (no longer of the band) was supposed to be center stage. Ross later went on to lead the band the Young Veins.

Like many bands from Las Vegas, they were raised Mormon

When we say "many bands from Las Vegas," we're really referencing the Killers. There's a small but vocal Mormon population out in Nevada--it makes sense, introduce some morals in Sin City!--but as the Panic! dudes aged, they left the religion behind.

Their band name comes from a Name Taken song

You have to admit, Panic! at the Disco is a pretty strange band nameā€¦but it makes sense when you realize that it's a lyrical quote. The lyric in the Name Taken song "Panic" goes, "Panic at the disco / Sat back and took it so slow / Are you nervous? Are you shaking? / Save compliments to praise complation / We don't have to feel we fit in / We can move back / We can leave them." Pretty emo stuff.

Brendon has a weird paper rolling tick

He calls it a "thinking process" thing, but apparently he rolls tiny pieces of paper in his pocket, all the time, ever since he was a kid. Weird.

Dan Pawlovich, who now drums in Panic!, used to be in Valencia

Panic! at the Disco has had something of a rotating cast of characters join and leave the group. Their current drummer, Dan Pawlovich, used to play in a power pop-punk band called Valencia who were totally awesome. They're currently on hiatus, which is a bummer, but let's hope Dan stays with Panic! for a while in the meantime.

They high-five before every show

Every band has their own pre-show ritual. 5 Seconds of Summer famously brush their teeth before hitting the stage, and apparently Panic! hi-five...in a very specific order. They used to do a Mighty Ducks quack-chant, but those days are behind them.

They won "Video of the Year" at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards

Okay, so if you're a super fan of the band, or have been there since day one, you know the group won Video of the Year at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, beating out Christina AguileraMadonna and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Not too bad for some freaks from the Nevada desert!

(Bonus: If you watch the clip above, you'll notice someone bum-rushed the stage (presumably before they could hug presenter Jennifer Lopez. BUMmer.)

Currently on his 'The Man of the Woods' tourJustin Timberlake brought out a special guest for his Cleveland show. LeBron James surprised concertgoers by showing up alongside Timberlake and taking a shot on stage. On Friday, the singer was also seen cheering on LeBron during the Pelicans and Cavaliers game.
