Big Freedia was scheduled to perform at Hattiesburg, Miss. venue The Dollar BOX Showroom last night (Feb. 12), but the concert was canceled by the club’s owner.
According to NOLA.com, the owner Ben Shemper received a call from the state’s Alcohol Beverage Control wherein it was implied that due to past Big Freedia performances the show would be in some sort of code violation.
Shemper was reported as having said that, “The word gyrating was in there. He made it sound like it was some kind of strip show or whatever.” On the venue’s Facebook page, Shemper gave a statement that read:
“For those of you that haven’t heard the Big Freedia show was cancelled. It seems I posted everywhere but the actual event. Don’t kill the messenger, the ABC warned us that they would ‘show up in full force and fine us’ if we allowed the show.”
The entire situation sounds dubious. Earlier, Freedia tweeted “My show cancelled in Mississippi for potential gyrating?!?! 2016?!?! #twerkloose” accompanied by a link to the NOLA.com article.
