This year, we’re celebrating an extended Black History Month by highlighting a variety of rising artists who are creating history before our very eyes. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is the definition of a rising star: An actress who has quietly engrained herself into Hollywood culture and improved every project she’s been part of, the 32-year-old Brit is making the leap to superstardom before our very eyes.

Just look at her resumé thus far: After starring on shows like Undercovers and Doctor Who, Mbatha-Raw starred in the acclaimed period piece Belle and the Oscar-nominated Beyond The Lights. In each role, the actress has proved indispensable, flexing her dramatic muscles in a variety of styles and genres.
Next up for Gugu is a role in Netflix’s upcoming Black Mirror revival and next year’s live-action Beauty and the Beast film; oh, and she’ll also pop up in Star Wars: Episode VIII, in a role that has yet to be announced. She’s got one of the hottest names in Hollywood right now, and soon, Gugu Mbatha-Raw will be a household name.
