For his debut solo performance on late-night television, Zayn Malik opted to forgo "PillowTalk," his first single and first No. 1 smash, and give The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon the debut of "It's You," a moody new song off of his forthcoming first album.
"It's You" is believed to be about Malik's ex-fianceé, Little Mix's Perrie Edwards; whatever the subject is, the song contains more intriguing instrumentation than "PillowTalk," with a piano-and-strings breakdown on the bridge and snarling guitar in the final chorus. Speaking of which, that chorus is all falsetto, with Zayn extending a single syllable for multiple seconds and letting his voice gently float over the percussion.
Zayn also unveiled the cover artwork to Mind of Mine, due out Mar. 25, and it recalls the kid-with-tats art of Lil Wayne's Tha Carter series:
