The National's Day of the Dead, a sprawling tribute to the Grateful Dead featuring a slew of elite indie-rock artists, is due out May 20 on 4AD. On Thursday morning (Mar. 24), a handful of tracks from the six-hour, 59-song compilation were released, including Dead covers from Courtney Barnett, the War on Drugs and the National themselves.
Listen to Barnett's take on "New Speedway Boogie," the National's "Morning Dew" and Phosphorescent combining with Jenny Lewis for "Sugaree."
Day of the Dead will benefit the Red Hot organization, which helps battle HIV/AIDS. The five-CD set was produced by the National's Aaron Dessner.
The Grateful Dead tribute will get a full-on live performance at this year's Eaux Claires festival, curated by Dessner and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon. The fest will take place in Eaux Claire, Wisc. on August 12 and 13.
