The controversy surrounding the Nina biopic continues to spiral outward, as Nina Simone's daughter has now come forth to support the portrayal of actress Zoe Saldana. In an interview with TIME magazine, 53-year-old Lisa Simone Kelly stated, “It’s unfortunate that Zoe Saldana is being attacked so viciously when she is someone who is part of a larger picture.
“It’s clear she brought her best to this project, but unfortunately she’s being attacked when she’s not responsible for any of the writing or the lies," Kelly (who is also a singer) continued.
She also told the magazine she was unaware of the diss that came from the verified Twitter account representing her mother’s estate.
.@zoesaldana Cool story but please take Nina's name out your mouth. For the rest of your life.— Nina Simone (@NinaSimoneMusic) March 3, 2016
Last week, Nina director Cynthia Mort also came to Saldana's defense: “Zoe gave an amazingly courageous and great performance. I think that’s all that should matter." The controversy surrounding the film is based on the actress' casting, where fans and relatives alike feel that Saldana (born to a Puerto Rican mother and Dominican father) was not the right choice to portray the African-American icon.
But you can judge for yourselves when Nina hits theaters on April 22.
