David Smyrl, who portrayed the beloved Mr. Handford on Sesame Street, has passed away at the age of 80. The Associated Press reports the actor was diagnosed with lung cancer in January.
Mr. Handford was a retired firefighter who ran Mr. Hooper’s store on Sesame Street. Smyrl played the character from 1990 to 1998, succeeding Leonard Jackson.
Cheryl Smyrl, David’s wife, said:
"He was funny. I could say so many good things about him. He was loved by so many people. He was a mentor to a lot of children. He was a family man, loyal, true and faithful."
Smyrl also worked on The Cosby Show and Benson. He is survived by his wife Cheryl and his stepson, Pancho Scott.
