Trey Songz Covers David Bowie's 'Life on Mars?' in Heartfelt Ballad: Listen

The David Bowie tribute train rides again: Its newest passenger is Trey Songz, who released on Thursday (March 17) a heartfelt cover of "Life on Mars?," which will be featured in the newest episode of the HBO series Vinyl on Sunday, March 20.

Listen to the song above. It's a bare-bones piano ballad, much like the original, although Songz's powerful vocals give the tune a newfangled vibe.

Songz told Complex about being asked by HBO producers to record a cover of "Life on Mars?" for Vinyl:

"I was honored that the producers thought of such a legend and myself in the same breath. I had to do what I do best, because Icons like David paved the way. After learning of his passing I knew that this was a special moment in time and this cover became my personal tribute to David."

Part of HBO's bailiwick with Vinyl is the release of a weekly soundtrack to accompany each episode of the show. To listen to Songz's cover of Bowie ad infinitum, you can pre-order Vinyl: Music from the HBO Series on iTunes before its forthcoming release tomorrow, Friday March 18.
