The ever-popular boxing film trend continues in Hollywood, as the Weinstein Company has released the first teaser trailer for Hands of Stone. The Roberto Duran biopic has an all-star lineup: Edgar Ramirez (Zero Dark Thirty, Joy) plays the Panamanian boxer, Roberto De Niro is legendary trainer Ray Arcel and Usher channels Sugar Ray Leonard.
Jurnee Smollett-Bell (True Blood), Ellen Barkin (Animal Kingdom) and John Turturro (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) also scored roles in the film.
Similar to last year's Creed, Hands of Stone follows Duran's rise to boxing fame. He earned 103 wins in his career, giving him the nickname Manos de Piedra, or Hands of Stone. The trailer also highlights his rivalry with Sugar Ray Leonard, who lost to Duran in 1980 and redeemed himself in the "No Mas" fight a few months later.
In 2015, Creed brought in $173.6 million worldwide and the Weinstein Co.'s own Southpaw grossed $91.7 million, so this film (which has been in the works for three years) will be in good company. Look out for Hands of Stone, written and directed by Venezuela's Jonathan Jakubowicz, in theaters Aug. 26.
