The newest Jared Leto fan to heap plaudits on the actor's portrayal of the Joker is Jared Leto.

In an interview with Coming Soon on Friday (April 22), Leto talked about injecting some new life into comic book villain, and said fans will be taken with the actor's unique spin on the character when Suicide Squad hits theaters this summer.

Leto talked at length about erring on the side of originality when donning the green-hair and makeup, so as not to borrow from previous Jokers played by Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger.:

"We walked in a completely new direction. I think we knew that we had to do that. It was important to do that. When the Joker has been done and done so well, it gives you a bit of an indication of where you shouldn’t go. There’s a bit of a map there."

Leto has seemed painfully aware of the expectations surrounding his performance as the menacing villain. Last December, the actor posted a meme featuring both Nicholson and Ledger wearing full Joker-costumes, bearing the words, "Don't worry, Leto will make us proud."

The Leto-generated hype hasn't been without its supporters though. Complex notes that Suicide Squad director David Ayer said last month that Leto's take on the character is enough to make "the hairs stand up on the back of your neck."

That much will be up for review from actual critics and fans when the film releases August 5.
