As the world mourns the loss of Prince at the age of 57, an autopsy will be performed on Friday (Apr. 22) to try to determine what led to the sudden death of the musical icon.

According to CNN, authorities are investigating the circumstances of Prince's death, which occurred on Thursday morning. Prince was found unconscious in an elevator in his Paisley Park studio in Chanhassen, Minn., and paramedics reportedly performed CPR but were unable to revive the music legend.

Last Friday (Apr. 15), Prince's private jet made an emergency landing in Moline, Ill. and he made a brief hospital visit. The scare was later attributed to the flu, and Prince appeared at a Paisley Park dance party the following day to show his fans that he was all right.

It is unclear whether his recent illness caused his death. Prince was pronounced dead at 10:07 a.m. on Thursday, and news broke around the globe soon after.
