Prince, one of the most important and revolutionary musicians of the past century, has passed away. He was 57 years old.
His publicist released the following statement to KTLA: "It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning at the age of 57."
Prince was found this morning in his Paisley Park recording studio in Chanhassen, Minn. A cause of death has not been determined, but Prince was briefly hospitalized last week after battling what was described as the flu.
Over the course of his career, Prince maintained his status as a titan of popular music. Early hits like “1999” and “Little Red Corvette,” both from his 1982 studio album 1999, begat Prince & The Revolution’s Purple Rain film and soundtrack, the latter of which is largely considered one of the best pop albums of the 1980s.
With nearly 40 studio albums to his name, including last year’s two-part HITnRUN release, Prince remained extremely prolific in the last decade of his life. In 2007, he delivered one of the greatest Super Bowl halftime performances ever.
