According to DeadlineSelena Gomez has joined with executive producer Aaron Kaplan and Freeform (formerly known as ABC Family) for a TV series that’s being billed as the “Latina Empire.”

So far untitled, the drama would be centered on a young Latina girl living in a lower-income neighborhood. The proposed series would be based on the life of East L.A. teenager Ana Cobarrubias, who also serves as a consultant in the development.

Kaplan, who also has helped with the TV series on Nicki Minaj’s real-life childhood experiences with Freeform, approached Freeform’s EVP programming Karey Burke after witnessing an inspiring speech given by Cobarrubias. From there, Kaplan and Burke reached out to Selena who signed on as an executive producer. As of now, there are no plans for her to act.

The project is still clearly in the early stages of planning—they are still looking for a writer. Hopefully, the TV series does makes it on air as stories like these are sorely needed.
