Hey Snapchat! Why’d you make a blackface Bob Marley filter for 4/20?

That’s what a lot of people are asking on this weed-related Wednesday (Apr. 20), as Snapchat has unveiled a Bob Marley filter that gives the user locs and a darker complexion. No, seriously, this was not shut down by anyone at Snapchat:

In a statement to Gizmodo, a Snapchat spokesman wrote:

“The lens we launched today was created in partnership with the Bob Marley Estate, and gives people a new way to share their appreciation for Bob Marley and his music. Millions of Snapchatters have enjoyed Bob Marley’s music, and we respect his life and achievements.”

Expect another statement—something a bit more apologetic—from Snapchat now that this controversy has reached trending-topic level. The Bob Marley Estate has yet to comment.
