Only a week since its digital release, Deadpool is taking over as the best-selling digital HD release ever. The movie has sold over 1 million units, according to 20th Century Fox, faster than any other title in the studio’s history.

From the get-go, Deadpool has been breaking records. After being released in theaters for just over six weeks, it took the title of the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, ousting The Matrix Reloaded who held the title since 2003.

In an interview with Deadline, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige commented on the key to Deadpool’s success:

“The thing that Deadpool shows is, when you present something unique to an audience, they will respond to it. When you present something as popular as a superhero character, in a different and unique and crazy way as they did in Deadpool, it demands attention and audiences went to it. They pulled it off.”

With the recent announcement of Deadpool 2 in the works, it looks like there could be more ground-breaking records in the future. Deadpool will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on May 10.
