Remember six months ago, when Drake was probably going to get his first Hot 100 No. 1 single as a lead artist with the universally beloved single “Hotline Bling”? Well, it didn’t happen. Adele’s “Hello” stood in his way for weeks on end, “Hotline Bling” peaked at No. 2, and Drake had to settle with a feature on a No. 1 song (Rihanna’s “Work”) without actually scoring a No. 1 single himself.
But hold the phone! Now Drake has another universally beloved song, “One Dance” featuring WizKid and Kyla, that has also peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100 chart! This week “One Dance” moved up 3-2, with only Desiigner’s “Panda” standing in its way. So, yeah, Drake is probably hitting that No. 1 spot, possibly as soon as next week.
As Billboard points out, “Panda” gains 2 percent in overall Hot 100 points, while “One Dance” moves up by 22 percent. Drake’s latest single bumps up to No. 2 on the Streaming Songs chart, moves 16-12 on Radio Songs and dips on Digital Songs but with a 43 percent gain. Also worth keeping in mind: Views, the album home of “One Dance,” was just released on Friday and has a record sales week coming, which will considerably boost "One Dance's" Hot 100 performance on next week’s tally.
If “One Dance” dances to the No. 1 spot next week or soon after, it will represent the first time Drake hits the position as a lead artist, and the third time overall, following Rihanna’s “What’s My Name?” and “Work.” In October, Drake wrote that “Hotline Bling” hitting No. 1 would be “the biggest moment of my career to date.”
