Kehlani opened up about the pitfalls of depression and mental illness in a candid speech delivered to fans on Saturday night (May 14). As someone who has personally battled with these issues in the public sphere—earlier this year, a suicide attempt left Kehlani in the hospital—the singer imparted wisdom informed by her own experience.
Speaking on self-harm and her latest depressive episode, the singer said:
"[Suicide] is something that so many young people are dealing with...and so many young people slip under the rug. Please, don't try it, don't do it. You know I'm very honest with the people that support me. It wasn't a first time thing, and that's not okay. It's not okay for anyone. Not the people around you, not the people who love you, not the people who care about you."
Kehlani's words were flanked by screams of support as she informed any at-risk people of various tools at their disposal, including the suicide prevention hotline.
In March, the rapper PARTYNEXTDOOR suggested on Instagram that he and Kehlani had rekindled their romance, even though the singer had just started dating Cleveland Cavaliers star Kyrie Irving. Shortly thereafter, following rumors of infidelity, the singer was hospitalized after trying to take her own life.
Kehlani has since rebounded though, and shared the earnest meditation "24/7" earlier this month. It was her first single since the drama unfolded in March.
