Disappointing Box Office Weekend, Especially for ‘Popstar’

Despite the onset of summer, air conditioned movie theaters failed to bring in patrons this weekend for a pretty dismal box office showing across the board.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows had the strongest performance even though it failed to meet expectations. The Ninja Turtles sequel brought in $35.2 million, much less than the nearly 70 million that the first TMNT movie delivered. Box Office Mojo reports that the second highest grossing film for the weekend was the romantic tear-jerker Me Before You at $18.2 million.

Unfortunately, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, the hip-hop mockumentary starring Andy Samberg, the rest of the Lonely Island crew, and a star-studded supporting cast, failed to garner impressive numbers. The film, which is in the vein of This Is Spinal Tap, brought in just $4.6 million.

After weeping for Popstar’s box office loss, watch the Lonely Island as they pick their celebrity entourage.
