“When Chance The Rapper asks you to play a song, you play that song!”
Truer words have never been spoken by Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard. The frontman introduced the band’s “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” by telling the Bonnaroo 2016 main stage crowd that Chance, who had effectively invaded all aspects of the four-day fest, wanted to hear the intimate ballad performed on Sunday afternoon.
Chance never got to hear the Plans track—he was busy commanding a listening session of Coloring Book in the Silent Disco during Death Cab’s set—but no matter: the Bonnaroo audience got its treat in the middle of a rock-solid set from the indie-rock elite.
Gibbard is looking rather nimble these days, dashing around the stage during “I Will Possess Your Heart” and head-banging during the finale of “Transatlanticism.” Positioned back-to-back in the setlist, “The Ghosts of Beverly Drive” and “Black Sun” championed newest album Kintsugi nicely, while the double whammy of “Cath…” and “Soul Meets Body” highlighted a setlist full of hits.
Death Cab For Cutie will continue a joint tour with Chvrches in Florida this week. Click here for the dates, and below, check out our chat with DCFC's bassist Nick Harmer at Bonnaroo:
