Ariana Grande is adding a new role to her résumé before the end of the year: live TV musical star.
The singer-actress announced that she's joining the cast of NBC's upcoming Hairspray Live! production. The Scream Queens and Victorious actress will be playing the role of Penny Pingleton, best friend to star Tracy Turnblad, previously played by Leslie Ann Powers and Amanda Bynes in the 1988 and 2007 films.
"Penny has been a dream role since Hairspray opened on Broadway," Grande shared on Twitter. "I’m so honored and beyond excited to be a part of this dream cast...... I will for sure pass out at the table read."
Grande joins a cast that includes Jennifer Hudson, Martin Short, Derek Hough, Kristin Chenoweth and Harvey Fierstein, who won a Tony Award for playing Edna Turnblad in the original Hairspray run; he'll be adapting the script.
Hairspray Live! will air Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 8 p.m. EST and will be filmed in Los Angeles. NBC previously did live renditions of The Wiz and Peter Pan.
