Shawn Mendes' 'Treat You Better' Video Is a Dark Look at Domestic Violence

I know what you did this summer. You watched Shawn Mendes' "Treat You Better" video. Multiple times.

Well, if my ability to see into the future is correct, Mendes fans will be flipping out over the Vine star's latest visual, which has him angsty and shirtless while he pines over someone in an abusive relationship.

Mendes tries to save his crush by taking things to the physical level and fighting the bad dude, but ultimately losing.

"I know I can treat you better / Than he can," he sings. "And any girl like you deserves a gentleman / Tell me why are we wasting time."

In the end, he includes the number of the National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233.

"Treat You Better" has already hit airwaves and is sitting at No. 35 on Billboard's Hot 100. It's the first single off the just-announced sophomore album from Mendes: Illuminate, out Sept. 23.
