WGBH Responds to Naughty 'Arthur' Memes

PBS Kids

Arthur, one of PBS' most beloved kids' shows, has recently been tainted by the internet thanks to the #ArthurMemes hashtag. If you were a big fan of the show like myself, the heavily NSFW trend will ruin your childhood by using the animated aardvark and his friends in hilariously explicit context.

The meme phenomenon got so viral that Boston's WGBH has responded—and they are not happy. A spokesperson for the TV network said in a statement, “We appreciate the memes that have been created and shared in good fun. We are, however, disappointed by the few that are outside of good taste.”

They continued to explain they are “lucky to have a fan base that is so engaged with Arthur, especially those millennials who grew up with him,” but wants “Arthur and his friends will be depicted in a way that is respectful and appropriate for all audiences, including young Arthur fans and their families.”

Arthur premiered on PBS on Sept. 2, 1996, and continues to air after 20 years. While most of the memes were in good fun, many bordered on being too crude especially for a kids' cartoon. Check out our picks for some of the best (and more tame) Arthur memes:
