Channing Tatum as… a merman? It could happen, with the film star in early discussions to star in a remake of Ron Howard’s beloved romantic comedy, Splash.

According to Variety, Tatum would star alongside Jillian Bell in the Disney remake, which updates the 1984 original’s story of a man who falls in love with a fish-lady, or “mermaid” in common parlance. Tom Hanks fell for Underwater Dayl Hannah way back when, and this time, the genders would be flipped so that Tatum would be the king of the sea.

The Splash remake's script was written by Maria Lewis-Ryan, and no director is attached at this point. The original was one of the earliest successes for Hanks and Howard; Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer would produce the reboot, along with Howard.

In other Channing Tatum tentpole franchise news, Gambit is expected to start filming next year; more details here.
