The Fader has word that Abel Tesfaye, the Torontonian who goes by The Weeknd, donated a quarter of a million bucks to the Black Lives Matter Network. Though the artist's music has yet to really dig into political matters, he tweeted some incensed thoughts this summer:

He's also retweeted Black Lives Matter sentiments from Kid CudiJohn Legend, filmmaker Michael Moore and Belly. Last week he donated $50,000 to the University of Toronto to help start an Ethiopian Studies program:

"#BlackLivesMatter was created in 2012," the movement's site reads, "after Trayvon Martin’s murderer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted for his crime, and dead 17-year old Trayvon was posthumously placed on trial for his own murder." Learn more about Black Lives Matter here.
