Against Me!'s seventh album, Shape Shift with Me, is without a doubt one of our most-anticipated for this fall. The lead single, "333," is top-notch, and now it's got a sleek, open-for-interpretation music video starring Natasha Lyonne (Orange Is the New Black, American Pie) and Andrew Howard (Hell on Wheels, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).
Watch the Ione Skye–directed. "333" video above, and see how that chorus—"All the devils that you don't know can all come along for the ride / Wanna be as close as I can get to you"—fits into the hallucinatory, disaffected-housewife narrative.
Shape Shift with Me is the follow-up to 2014's Transgender Dysphoria Blues, which came in the wake of frontwoman Laura Jane Grace, formerly Tom Gabel, coming out as a trans woman. The album hits on Sept. 16. A previously released press release from the band had Grace teasing it as such:
“Is there a record that is about relationships from a trans perspective? There needs to be more records about trans rights and everything like that, but feeling like I already did that, I wanted to move on to write commentary on living from a trans perspective. I wanted to write the transgender response to The Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main St., Liz Phair’s Exile In Guyville and The Streets’ A Grand Don’t Come For Free. All those records are relationship records. There’s been an infinite amount of records talking about what love means from a cisgender perspective. I wanted to present the trans perspective on sex, love and heartbreak.”
