Leonardo DiCaprio is planning to bring one of your favorite classic '90s cartoons to life! The nature-loving actor's Appian Way Productions is working with Paramount Pictures to create a Captain Planet movie, The Hollywood Reporter writes.
Once the studio acquires the rights to the TV series, Scream Queens star Glen Powell and writing partner Jono Matt will join the project to provide the film's screenplay. Then, Jennifer Davisson Killoran and DiCaprio (who is kind of a modern-day version of Captain Planet himself) are set to produce it.
Captain Planet and the Planeteers was a TV show that aired on TBS from September 1990 to December 1992. It starred David Coburn as the voice of the green-haired environmentalist who helps young people around the world combat nature's evils. But as THR states, the new film will shift the original plot and pin the superhero as a "washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him."
The announcement comes after Sony Pictures tried to claim rights to Captain Planet in 2013, but nothing came of the deal. As of now, there's no word of when the film will begin production. But in the meantime, check out our roundup of Disney classics that deserve the live-action treatment.
