We've seen the names Ben Berger, Ryan McMahon, and Ryan Rabin pop up on the credits for some of our favorite artists like Grouplove, Halsey, Marina & The Diamonds, Jennifer Lopez, Tegan and Sara, Tove Lo, and, perhaps most notably, on Walk the Moon's "Shut Up and Dance" smash—one of the best songs of 2015. Now, the trio have brought their pop superpowers together to create Captain Cuts and just revealed their debut single.
Take a listen to "Love Like We Used To," which has all the markings of a radio hit in the making: Lively chants in the intro, slinky synth production, a stomping chorus, and a peppering of unforgettable lyrical phrases (we think "Got me drunk me tonight on a throwback vibe" is our favorite). But if you're under the impression that these guys are just the princes of Top 40, take a deeper look: The trio run Emo Nite in Los Angeles and were behind last year's genius, pop-meets-pop-punk mash-up mixtape If You're Listening It's Never Too Late. The influence of the early '00s punk and emo sounds are not lost on these guys as those bands continue to top the charts in 2016, so we're insanely curious to see what direction Captain Cuts steer toward.
Get to know Captain Cuts member Ryan Rabin a little better in this classic festival interview with Grouplove, where Rabin plays drummer and producer for the "Tongue Tied" band:
