John Legend's production company isn't messing around. Get Lifted Film Co. is co-producing a new drama, Monster, that'll star Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson, fashion killa A$AP Rocky and rap god Nas. It'll be funny if someone wins an Oscar since Charlize Theron won one for a movie called Monster in 2003.
Rocky made his acting debut in 2015's Dope. Nas has dabbled in onscreen work since 1998's Belly, recently showing up in 2013's Black Nativity. Hudson, of course, has held her own in both the movie and record-making worlds since her Dreamgirls/American Idol double-hitter days. (And also acted in Black Nativity.)
Monster starts filming this week in New York City. Written by Colen C. Wiley and Janece Shaffer, it'll mark Anthony Mandler's feature debut as director. He's helmed projects for Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Muse, Spice Girls, Black Eyed Peas and Snoop Dogg.
Monster's plot centers on a 17-year-old named Steve who gets potentially wrongfully charged with felony murder. "As Steve’s world comes crashing down around him," Deadline writes, "we witness his journey from a smart, likeable young man from Harlem attending an elite high school through a complex legal battle that could leave him spending the rest of his life in prison."
