Donatella Versace opened up to Vogue (quite candidly) about why she chose Zayn to co-design the collection, which will go on sale in May:
“Why I want Zayn now: He can make me talk to his followers. I want to listen to the language, I want to learn. I want to know what they think, what they like. This is a new generation, [which] if I do not go through someone like Zayn I will never reach.”
Versace added that she first met Zayn while he was singing in One Direction, when Kate Moss encouraged her to check out their music (she's not a fan: "NO!"). She noticed the way he treated girlfriend Gigi Hadid like a "gentleman" and decided to get him on board.
This will mark the first time Versus has been co-designed by what Donatella calls "a rock star," and it ushers in a new era for the brand, since creative director Anthony Vaccarello left Versus for Saint Laurent in April.
Zayn said in a statement to Vogue:
“I first collaborated with her when she approached me to dress me for the Met Ball and the relationship developed from there. When they made that suit for me I knew it was a brand that wouldn’t be intimidated by big ideas.”
Zayn will star in two Versus Versace campaigns in the coming months, so keep your eyes peeled. Although they will perhaps be so bold that we won't be able to look away anyway...
