Camila Cabello announced her departure from Fifth Harmony on Monday morning, beginning the "breakup" of the band (as Forbes bluntly wrote). And while the rest of the group plans to stick together, there's no denying that 5H has lost one of their harmonies.
However, most fans weren't surprised by the announcement, as Fifth Harmony has been publicly pointing toward their split for over a year. A third album may be on the way, but in past interviews, the band seemed on the same page that they'd eventually go their separate ways.
Click through to see the writing on the wall about Fifth Harmony's fate:
Back in their formative weeks on the X Factor, Fifth Harmony performed Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" in front of Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid, Britney Spears and Demi Lovato. In her critique, Lovato said, "Right now, there's only one person doing it for me."
Watch at the end of the clip, when host Khloe Kardashian pushed Lovato to reveal her favorite. Lovato points at Cabello and says, "I think you guys should all learn something from her."
In September 2015, Fifth Harmony was featured on the cover of Latina amgazine, and for the cover story, Cabello was asked if she thought the group would ever break up: "Honestly, I think we all do," she answered.
"We'd be lying if we all said this is a picture-perfect thing," Cabello told the mag. "Like we all completely agreed on the album track list and what the sound and the music-video treatment would be like, which usually happens in bands who grew up together. But for manufactured bands, it's harder."
A rep for 5H eventually said those comments were taken out of context.
The band had a tense and solemn interview with EuropaFM in Madrid in December 2015, when they were asked about the group's fate. Dinah Jane Hansen took charge of the question, giving this answer:
“We’ve been together for basically three years now and looking back… we’re very, very… happy with where we’re at right now," Hansen said. "But from here on out, we wanna hopefully win a couple more awards together… maybe build more music together as well. But I feel like we’ll probably go our separate ways later on. That's the truth."
In December 2015, Camila tried to clarify the rumors of a breakup, saying that, yes, ONE DAY, they will break up. She told Entertainment Tonight on a red carpet that the band was in the recording studio for their second album, 7/27, but a breakup would be somewhere along the road.
"Obviously any band, any group, someday is not going to be together anymore," Cabello said. "That's the truth. [Everybody] kind of knows it, whether you say it or not. We're working on new music for you guys right now -- just be happy!"
In February 2016, Normani Kordei was interviewed for Cliche magazine, answering, “Yes, in the future,” when asked about going solo.
“In the beginning, we all had intentions of pursuing solo careers," she said. "I’m still an individual, as well as the others, meaning we have slightly different visions and aspirations.”
In the same interview, she assured fans that album number two was still on the way and that the band had more to accomplish before splitting up.
“We have a ton of work [to do] and much more to accomplish as Fifth Harmony before that happens,” she said.
In March 2016, Entertainment Tonight was able to eke out the advice that Harry Styles gave Fifth Harmony about breaking up. With experience with Zayn leaving One Direction, Styles told the singers to stay connected.
"I remember we were in rehearsals and he came up to us," Dinah Jane said. "[He] told us as a group, 'All five of you should be on the same page and the closest things to each other because around all five of you there are gonna be people that are gonna come and try to snatch you, people are gonna try to break you guys apart. So, as long as you five are your best friends, that's the most important.'"
In September 2016, Camila walked out of Fifth Harmony's show in St. Louis. Later, she took to Snapchat to explain why.
"Hi Missouri, sorry I couldn't finish the set last night," she wrote. "Was having too much anxiety and couldn't finish it."
"I love u. I'm truly sorry."
