Disney and Pixar released another intense trailer for Cars 3, which follows last November's somber teaser. The legendary but aging Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) makes a return to racing but is met with stiff competition from a younger competitor. His name? The flashy Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer).
With the help of race technician Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo), McQueen tries to defeat Storm. “McQueen is not the young hotshot anymore, the kid he was back then in Cars 1. He’s in the middle of his life, and as an athlete, that’s getting up there. You have your whole life ahead of you, yet your career is starting to show its age," director Brian Fee explains.
"He’s looking in the mirror and realizing, ‘I’m 40 years old,’ and dealing with the fact that the thing that you love more than anything else, you might not be able to do forever.” Along with Wilson, Cars 3 finds the return of Larry the Cable Guy as Mater, Bonnie Hunt as Sally Carrera, and Cheech Marin as Ramone.
The animated movie, the follow-up to 2011's Cars 2, hits theaters on June 16, 2017. For even more Disney-Pixar nostalgia, listen to the Besterday podcast girls geek out about Monsters, Inc.'s 15th anniversary below:
