A Star Is Born isn't just Bradley Cooper's directorial debut—it's also Lady Gaga's big screen introduction as Stefani Germanotta. The pop superstar's plan to use her birth name was revealed on Monday alongside a little more material about the remake.
The first photo from the production shows a brunette Lady Germanotta, as Ally, singing into a mic while Cooper's Jackson Maine—"a country music star on the brink of decline when he discovers a talented unknown named Ally," Deadline writes—backs her up on electric guitar. Concert scenes will be filmed in Indio, Calif. this week in between Coachella's two weekends of fun. (Gaga is a headliner, and dropped a new song, "The Cure," to celebrate.)
"I always wanted to be an actress on the big screen," Gaga wrote on Instagram with the first-look pic. "The story of A Star is Born is so special and I'm so grateful to Bradley for making my dream come true."
Gaga follows A Star Is Born renditions starring Judy Garland in 1954 and Barbra Streisand in '76. Beyoncé was previously attached for the lead. In 2016, Mother Monster won a Golden Globe for her part on Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story; she was also nominated for an Oscar that year, for The Hunting Ground song "Til It Happens to You." Her other screen credits include Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and Machete Kills
A Star Is Born is dated for Sept. 28, 2018 and will also feature comedian Andrew Dice Clay (Entourage, Blue Jasmine) and cowboy/character actor Sam Elliott (The Ranch, The Big Lebowski). Bradley Cooper will notch his first writing credit for co-writing the script.
