"Can't wait to hear how this sounds on a bag of Doritos," Sam Cooke is rumored to have said upon recording "Bring It on Home to Me" in 1962. And finally, the dream is realized.
The entire Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 soundtrack, Awesome Mix Vol. 2, will play through a headphone jack on a branded bag of the cheese-and-spice–laced Frito-Lay snack. There's an old-school cassette player design on the front, and it's rechargeable. Billboard reports that fans can grab their own at amazon.com/doritos on April 28 while supplies last.
In addition to Cooke, Guardians' Awesome Mix Vol. 2 features recognizable toe-tappers from Fleetwood Mac, Electric Light Orchestra, George Harrison, Parliament, Cat Stevens, Cheap Trick, Silver, Jay & the Americans, Looking Glass, Glen Campbell, Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah and Sweet, plus an original track, "Guardians Inferno," featuring David Hasselhoff. The 2014 soundtrack to Marvel's first movie in the franchise was the year's No. 5 best-selling album in the U.S. and the No. 1 soundtrack.
"Can you imagine a better way to listen to this soundtrack than with a bag of Doritos?" PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay North America senior director of marketing Ryan Matiyow tells Billboard. "We couldn’t either.” Mindy Hamilton, Marvel Entertainment's senior VP of global partnerships, adds that “Marvel and Doritos have a very similar set of core fans, so we wanted to maximize availability of this soundtrack by making it as accessible in a unique way.”
