Ricky Martin has taken acting roles precious few times in his career, and not on American television since a Season 3 episode of Glee five years ago. Now über-showrunner Ryan Murphy has recruited the 45-year-old Puerto Rican singer again, this time for American Crime Story. The anthology series' 10-episode arc will focus on the murder of Gianni Versace, played by Édgar Ramírez (Hands of Stone). Martin will play his partner of 15 years, Antonio D'Amico.
Penélope Cruz plays sister Donatella Versace, the part Lady Gaga was originally rumored to be taking. Darren Criss will play Andrew Cunanan, the serial killer who murdered the fashion icon in 1997. The Versace season will debut in 2018, after a Hurricane Katrina installment, also set for '18.
Entertainment Weekly notes that Martin did Broadway's Les Misérables in 1996 and Evita in 2012. On his Glee episode, he played the high school's Spanish teacher.
American Crime Story's first season, 2016's celebrated The People v. O.J. Simpson, included a few surprising casting choices itself, including John Travolta and David Schwimmer. It won five Emmys, more than any other series at this year's ceremony. Two Golden Globes, too.
