Halsey continues to bare her soul on new song "Eyes Closed," a tragic ballad that premiered today on Beats 1 Radio. The track's production is chilling, with its piano melodies and harps rushing in and out like gusts of wind as the singer muses about a previous toxic relationship.
"Now if I keep my eyes closed he looks just like you / But he'll never stay, they never do / Now if I keep my eyes closed he feels just like you / But you've been replaced / I'm face to face with someone new," Halsey mourns on the chorus. If you're thinking that "Eyes Closed" sounds similar to The Weeknd's older mixtapes, you wouldn't be too far off. The brooding Canadian guy actually co-wrote the song.
"Eyes Closed" comes after last month's "Now Or Never," both of which will be found on Halsey's sophomore album Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (out June 2). The singer explained her love for Romeo and Juliet with Zane Lowe and director Baz Luhrmann:
"I was so obsessed with [Baz Luhrmann's] Romeo + Juliet and I had watched it over and over again. I was going through this really bad breakup, this prolonged breakup, this toxic breakup...I didn't make the correlation [that] I loved the film because of what was happening in my real life. Life imitates art. One day as I was getting to the rising action of the record—the moment where I'm realizing the love is doomed, this like forsaken kind of thing—I realized that that's why I was so obsessed with the [movie]. Because I felt like I was living it."
Halsey will be taking her new album on the road with an international arena tour alongside special guests PartyNextDoor and Charli XCX. The North American trek will kick off in Uncasville, Conn. on September 29. Pre-sale tickets for the tour begins on May 8 while general on sale starts on May 12 via HFKTour.com.
