Christian Rapper Lecrae: "People Are Wondering If I'm Real or Fake"
Houston rapper Lecrae nearly broke mixtape site Datpiff with the 2012 mixtape Church Clothes. The Christian rapper returns with Church Clothes, Vol. 2, an equally incendiary mix featuring David Banner, B.o.B, Paul Wall and producer Boi-1da. Lecrae spoke to The Mixdown about how it all went down.
On Mixtapes
"I like doing mixtapes because you can take some risks that
you probably wouldn't take on your album. It's gritty. Obviously there's been a
lot of pressure, but I think it's going to be nuts. My whole thing has always been
walking with people, but not preaching at them. It's like your big brother
walking you through your neighborhood."
On New Track "Round of Applause"
"It's about the fact that I'm not supposed to be here. The
system is made for me to fail. Single-parent home; father on drugs. I beat all
the odds and went to college. It's just a song encouraging people and saying, 'Man,
if you got your GED, you're beating the odds right now.' You got to celebrate
that stuff."
On New Track "Believe"
"It's my story. People are scratching their heads
wondering if I'm real or fake or just using this faith thing to get over on
people. It's me saying, 'What would it take to make you believe that God did
this. I can't give you a pattern for what this is. This is just faith.'"
