The stark piano chords and subtle-yet-piercing vocal approach Christina Aguilera and A Great Big World created on "Say Something" made it a multi-platinum Top 5 hit. But Pentatonix—arguably America's favorite a capella group with a Top 10 album and a hit single from this holiday season—have somehow made the ballad even more emotionally jarring with a new cover.
"Say Something" is now a lush, five-part arrangement with layers of harmonies and subtle beatboxing. PTX's sole female member Kirstie Maldonado takes lead on the majority of the song, busting out big-time belts Xtina herself would be proud of. And you'll get chills when you hear Avi Kaplan (in the beanie) on the bridge section.
Although Pentatonix are an a cappella quintet, they added a special twist to this cover: A cello. Beatboxer Kevin Olusola multitasks by spitting the beat and playing cello during "Say Something."
