Beartooth Want Their Shows To Be Cathartic, Give Screaming Advice

Beartooth released their debut full-length, Disgusting, right before Warped Tour kicked off, but the decision to do so at that particular time was completely unintentional. "It's nice to go out on the tour right after a fresh release. All these people get to see it for the first time on Warped Tour," vocalist Caleb Shomo explained. "It's a really cool environment, really cool shows. I think it's great."

The frontman is no stranger to Warped: he performed on the punk rock summer camp circuit with his old band Attack Attack! This time it's a bit more intimate, with songs that draw on his childhood and being an underdog. "I just kind of write about whatever I'm feeling in that moment. [The song] 'Beaten in Lips' specifically, I wrote that after talking to so many people at shows that deal with being abused and things like that," he continued. "I just can't really wrap my head around it. It's unfortunate. That's what inspired me to write that song."

Guitarist Taylor Lumley agrees. "For us, we want it to be a place where people can go. If you're dealing with stuff like that at home, and you want to come out to one of our shows, or any show, any of the bands on this tour... that can be a place where you don't have to feel like you're in harm's way, like you're being judged by whoever's oppressing you."

It helps when you have a screaming voice as powerful as Shomo's. He has some advice to give when it comes to this hardcore delivery: "Tighten up your throat, if it bleeds you're doing it well!" the singer jokes. "No, basically if it hurts you're doing it wrong. I don't know. I just kind of get up and yell. Let it happen."
