DJ Premier and Royce da 5'9" have been working together for years, and the guys that make up PRhyme are huge fans of each other's work. So when Fuse's Esteban Serrano asked them to list off their favorite releases put out by their respective partner in PRhyme, it was easy for Prem to immediately name his favorite Royce records and vice versa.
Favorites include "Boom" for Premier (and the fact that he produced it probably plays into that, so it's understandable!) and the Hit 'Em/Ding! Ding EP. His most personal pick would be the Eminem collaboration "Scary Movies," the one-off single that piqued his interest in the relatively unknown rapper despite his big-name collaborator.
"That was actually the first time I ever heard Royce," reflects Prem. "I was good friends with [the producer of] the track, and I had gotten the 12"....On the back of the cover, Royce is a little blurry, and Eminem's got the skull rings on, and all that stuff, so it was almost like, 'Who is this guy?' The way they were rhyming together on both sides of the single, I just took to him."
As for Royce, there's one track that stands out among the rest in DJ Premier's arsenal, and that's the inventive and now iconic Jeru the Damaja joint "Come Clean."
"It's probably one of the top five greatest beats in the history of hip hop, just in terms of being groundbreaking," he says. (He's also a huge fan of "Nas Is Like," so he's probably thrilled that Prem is currently at work on Nas' forthcoming album.)
