Madonna's got her 13th studio album, Rebel Heart, coming in exactly one month. A new Queen of Pop record is never less than exciting, but the visual element's always been as important to her career as the songs. Whether it's the music videos, live performances or photo shoots, Madonna's been provoking us with her imagery for three solid decades.
The video for "Living for Love," Rebel Heart's Diplo-produced lead single, is no different. Madonna does a glitzy bullfighter act on a cabaret-style stage…while half-clad guys wearing gigantic bull horns writhe all over the place in tight leather pants and Kanye West–style masks. The horns are just devilish enough to evoke Madonna's long history of upsetting Christians everywhere.
With no warning, the clip ends with a dark quote from Friedrich Nietzsche, philosophy's prince of darkness:
"Man is the cruelest animal. At tragedies, bullfights and crucifixions he has felt best on earth; and when he invented hell for himself that was his very heaven."
"Living for Love" is one of several Rebel Heart tracks Diplo worked on. It's also the album's first song. Earlier this week, leaks of the Nas collaboration "Veni Vidi Vici" and the Chance the Rapper duet "Iconic" appeared. (The latter also features Mike Tyson doing a little speech.)
